During the 2013-2014 school year, Excelsior Springs Area Career Center implemented Mathtastic Monday. Ms. Cogburn was brought on as ESACC’s math coach. Using student data from the Compass test, Ms. Cogburn focused math efforts in Algebra I and Algebra II concepts. Over the course of three years, Mathtastic Monday lessons, learning videos, and problems emphasized different math concepts that help prepare students for college entrance exams and/or career application. Even though 2013-2014 was the first year of implementing a building-wide math focus, our ultimate goal was to offer students an integrated math credit. Over the course of two years, Ms. Cogburn visited multiple career centers over the state of Missouri who offer a math credit to their students, researched integrated curriculum online, and collaborated with our sending school's math departments to identify high-need areas. After much research and preparation a proposal was submitted to the Excelsior Springs School Board and Integrated Math was approved at the March 2016 board meeting.
Now, all students enrolled in a junior/senior level program have the opportunity to earn 1/2 integrated math credit. Integrated Math is a yearlong course that will allow students to demonstrate math skills with emphasis on problem solving techniques. Topics include: linear measurements, fractions, decimals, percent, order of operations, ratios, proportions, measurement conversions, elementary statistics, basic algebra and geometry concepts. Students will focus on seven objectives each semester and students must pass six of the seven objectives each semester to earn the credit. Remediation will be available for those students who do not pass six of the seven objectives and ACT practice will be available once students pass six of the seven objectives.
Lessons and videos are available via Google Classroom.
